Summary/objective

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) is seeking a qualified pool of adjunct instructors for its English program that is housed in the Arts and Humanities department within the College of Arts & Sciences. Adjunct instructs may be assigned to teach high school students as a part of its Dual Enrollment program or undergraduate students. Interested persons must be willing to teach assigned classes, mentor students, and abide by department and University deadlines.

Essential functions

  1. Deliver high-quality instruction in both on-campus and online formats, ensuring course objectives are met and appropriates assessment of student learning.
  2. Teach one (3) credit course as part of the English Program at Southern University at New Orleans.
  3. Attend classes as scheduled.
  4. Develop a course syllabus and lectures in alignment with college standards.
  5. Regularly check SUNO email for timely correspondence with Dean, Department Chair, students, and other members of the SUNO community.
  6. Be available to meet with students, as needed, before or after class time or at other scheduled times throughout the week.
  7. Adhere to the policies as set forth in the "Faculty Handbook", including, but not limited to attendance and make-up policy for missed assignments and final exams.
  8. Promptly return all exams assignments giving students feedback on their work.
  9. Turn in all required paperwork in a timely fashion, including, but not limited to contracts, syllabi, class lists, attendance sheets, and final grades.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Required education and experience

  • Master's degree in a related field with 18 credit hours in the content area.
  • Experience in the field associated with the course being taught.
  • Strong commitment to high-quality instruction in a diverse, student-centered environment and the ability to work with students with various learning styles and backgrounds.
  • Interest in active and collaborative learning and enthusiasm for working in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Canvas, and the instructional use of technology to teach traditional, hybrid or on-line courses, as needed.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and faculty.
  • Expertise that complements and expands that of the department.
  • Online, Hybrid, Remote or blended teaching experience is highly desirable
