The New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program (NJLAP) offers confidential and free support to any attorney in New Jersey. NJLAP provides guidance and resources for a variety of issues including stress, substance use, anxiety, career concerns, gambling, and depression. The goal of NJLAP is to help lawyers define their challenges, recommend resources, and provide encouragement along their journey to their best self and best life. With NJLAP, no attorney has to face their problems alone.
Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for an Attorney Counselor based in New Brunswick, NJ. The Attorney Counselor will be responsible for providing guidance, support, and resources to attorneys facing various challenges. The day-to-day tasks include conducting one-on-one counseling sessions, developing recovery plans, offering crisis intervention, and maintaining confidential case records. Additionally, the Attorney Counselor will be involved in outreach and educational programs to raise awareness about mental health and substance use issues within the legal community.
Position Overview :
Provides initial assessment, screening, counseling and support services for LAP Clients including problem identification, assessment, referral and ongoing support. Develops and facilitates appropriate support groups, maintains client database. In addition, maintains ongoing relationships and networking with appropriate community stakeholders. Assist with program promulgation and educational seminars, provides information and support to bar candidates, law students and other groups.
Principal Responsibilities:
Provides Services: through initial assessment, counseling, support, and introduction/referral to the most effective, economical, and convenient helping resources; coordination services with treatment providers; provide ongoing support and encouragement as appropriate.
Telephone/Program Coverage (including client intake, crisis intervention, information calls)
Salesforce, client record and database maintenance.
Outreach and education including legal educational sessions.
Fostering relationships with treatment and mental health providers locally and nationally.
Group development and facilitation.
Particular focus on recovery, special assignments as directed.
Guiding clients through specialty issues, or at the direction of Interim Director or Associate Director.
Guiding students, candidates and law graduates with bar application problems, evaluations.
Assists with volunteer development and training.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
o Minimum of 5 years of legal experience; at least 3 years of treatment experience with substance
use disorder and “broad brush” person problems or if in recovery, minimum of 5 years and familiarity twelve step fellowships and awareness of other recovery and supportive communities.
