Job Description

Chief Technology Officer – Bio-Based Materials

A fast-growing, venture-backed company pioneering carbon-conserving microbes and bio-based materials is seeking a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead its technology strategy across R&D, scale-up, and commercialization. This role is central to driving the shift from fossil-based to renewable products through breakthrough innovations in biomanufacturing.

What You’ll Do

  • Set and execute technical strategies for commercialization and manufacturing in close collaboration with R&D and external partners.
  • Act as the primary technical voice with strategic partners, CMOs, investors, and the business development team.
  • Translate company goals into actionable technical roadmaps, overseeing timelines, risks, and resource allocation.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration across research, operations, product, and commercialization teams.
  • Build and scale the internal technical organization, including systems and infrastructure.
  • Serve as the connective tissue between scientific, engineering, and commercial functions to accelerate time-to-market.

What We’re Looking For

  • PhD or MS in Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • 15+ years in biotech, with 8+ years in leadership and strategic roles.
  • Proven experience transitioning products from R&D to commercial-scale manufacturing.
  • Strong background in partnering with business and external stakeholders (e.g., CMOs, investors).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; able to synthesize and convey complex technical material to non-technical audiences.
  • Startup or early-stage company experience strongly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $200,000 – $280,000 annually
  • Equity options
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • FSA, commuter benefits, and supplemental insurance
  • 18 days PTO + 10 paid holidays
  • Relocation support available

This is an opportunity to help shape a real-zero economy by leading innovation at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and engineering. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship may be considered for the right candidate.
