About the Role

We’re looking for a Client Controller to join our growing team. In this leadership role, you’ll own the financial oversight and strategy for a portfolio of nonprofit clients. You will guide accounting teams, provide high-level financial insights, and ensure accurate, timely reporting that supports mission-aligned decision-making. As the linchpin between our internal staff and client leadership, you’ll be key in building long-term financial health and accountability.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, client-centric environment, enjoys mentoring others, and wants to make a meaningful impact across multiple organizations.

  • Lead monthly financial review meetings with clients to present results, highlight trends, and support data-driven decisions.
  • Supervise and review work completed by Associates and Senior Associates, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Oversee the month-end and year-end close process including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial package preparation.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, cash flow forecasts, and budget-to-actual analyses.
  • Support clients in annual budget development, mid-year forecasting, and grant/contract reporting.
  • Advise clients on internal controls, accounting policies, and financial best practices tailored to nonprofit operations.
  • Ensure clients remain compliant with IRS, state, and local requirements, including 990 support and audit readiness.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of financial documentation for audits, tax filings, and board presentations.
  • Contribute to the development of internal SOPs and coach team members on improving process efficiency and client service delivery.
  • Collaborate with leadership on client expansion, new service offerings, and staff development.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred ).
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including controllership or finance leadership within the nonprofit sector.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, and financial reporting for grants/restricted funding.
  • Proficiency with accounting platforms such as QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, and Excel; experience with integrations and system optimization is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clients or projects with professionalism, accuracy, and grace under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills with a proven ability to present complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • A collaborative leadership style and a passion for mentoring others.
  • High attention to detail, strategic thinking, and a client-service mindset.
