Onward Search is a specialized staffing and talent solutions company that helps professionals find top jobs with the nation’s leading brands. We’re looking to hire a Junior Software Engineer. This is a 6 Month with possible extension, 100% Remote.

The Junior Software Engineer will join our team working on a Scala-based data processing platform. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, has a solid foundation in software engineering, and is interested in developing their skills in cloud-based and distributed systems.

Required Skills:

• Basic proficiency in Scala, with some experience using sbt for build management
• Big data experience
• Understanding of functional programming concepts
• Familiarity with JSON serialization/deserialization (e.g., Circe)
• Interest in learning about cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP) and authentication mechanisms
• Proficiency with SQL and PostgreSQL for data storage and querying
• Exposure to asynchronous or concurrent programming concepts
• Familiarity with version control systems (Git) and collaborative development workflows
• Willingness to test and validate code effectively, including writing unit and integration tests

Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with big data concepts or tools (e.g., distributed data processing, data lakes, or similar technologies)
• Exposure to distributed messaging systems (e.g., Google Pub/Sub)
• Interest in learning about data pipeline orchestration and workflow management
• Familiarity with containerization concepts

Soft Skills:

• Strong problem-solving and willingness to learn
• Effective communication and collaboration in a team setting
• Ability to write clear, maintainable, and well-documented code

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
• 0.5-2 years of professional software engineering experience (Prefers someone with a little experience. If fresh out of college they will still go through technical round of interviews and will need to prove skill set)

*To qualify for our benefits package, you must work over 30 hours per week and the length of assignment must be a minimum of 10 weeks.
