Job Description

Research Associate, Cell Biology

Company Overview

XDemics, a Caltech spinout, is fundamentally improving the way cells are grown. We’ve addressed a primary bottleneck—the basic inability to efficiently transfer oxygen in media during cell growth. Our high-density cell respiration (HDCR) technology enables mammalian cells to grow at 20- to 100-fold higher densities—whether in a Petri dish or bioreactor. As a result, scientists and manufacturers can produce more high-quality, viable cells in far less space and time, dramatically slashing R&D and manufacturing costs.

From the lab bench to industrial-scale production, HDCR is transformative. One Expansify™ Petri dish replaces 25 traditional polystyrene dishes, vastly accelerating biomedical innovation while cutting costs. With predictable process scale-up, our Profusion-Midi™ 5L and Profusion-Max™ 50L bioreactors will respectively generate up to 1–10 trillion cells, eliminating the need for massive, complicated 200–2000L stirred-tank vessels.

HDCR systems deliver high-quality cell and gene therapies more efficiently, reducing the overall cost of these advanced medicines by up to 80%, achieving cost parity with biologics and making these life-changing treatments more accessible worldwide.

We are seeking a talented and experienced associate to join our outstanding team in our laboratory facilities within the world-famous Buck Institute in Marin County, California.

Position Summary

We are looking for a Research Associate with demonstrated biotech experience in tissue culture, protein expression, and screening. The ideal candidate thrives at the bench, excels in collaboration, and is eager to contribute to a dynamic, cutting-edge high-tech startup environment.

Key Responsibilities

· Evaluate the performance of our Expansify™ cultureware product line.

· Perform routine cell culture expansion, characterization, and maintenance of primary and immortalized cell lines.

· Characterize engineered cell lines for mAb and virus production, as well as other applications.

· Conduct molecular biology experiments, including cloning, PCR, qPCR, and sequencing.

· Analyze and interpret experimental data, maintaining accurate and detailed lab records.

· Operate bioreactors

· Maintain laboratory stocks and supplies.

· Collaborate with Engineering Dept. to support ongoing research projects and initiatives.

· Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

· Stay current with scientific literature and advancements in the field to implement best practices and innovative techniques.

· Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate research findings.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting is required (startup experience a plus).
  • Proven expertise in mammalian cell culture, transient expression and purification, and molecular biology techniques (e.g., qPCR, Western blot, cloning) is required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience with primary immune cells, gene therapy or viral vector research is highly desirable.
  • Strong molecular biology skills, including cloning, PCR, qPCR, and sequencing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Why Join Us?

At XDemics, you'll be part of a passionate team pushing the boundaries of science in a dynamic, startup environment. We offer competitive compensation, equity opportunities, comprehensive benefits, and the chance to make a real impact in the biotech industry.
