Job Description

Summary of the Position

The Senior Food Scientist is responsible for hands-on, day-to-day technical project management, new product development, product and cost optimization, and quality improvement activities across all JBSS business channels and product categories. This role provides technical leadership and ownership in developing innovative private label products such as nuts, mixes, and snacks. The Senior Food Scientist also supports the fulfillment of sample requests, leads innovation projects from benchtop through execution, and manages customer relationships.

Functions of the Position:

  • Lead technical project management by organizing team meetings, collaborating cross-functionally to identify risks and mitigation plans, and working with engineering, packaging, and operations to develop consumer-driven new products.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (marketing and sales) and external customers to fulfill new item and sample requests, ensuring clarity, efficiency, and timely delivery.
  • Leverage external suppliers to source new raw materials, flavors, and sensory evaluation resources to support innovation.
  • Work with internal departments such as R&D, production, accounting, and procurement to develop innovative, on-trend formulas that align with JBSS capabilities.
  • Integrate into production operations by working with schedulers, supervisors, operators, packaging, and QA to scale up and commercialize new products.
  • Document raw material and finished goods specifications and ensure proper integration into JBSS systems.
  • Support technical services on matters related to allergens, Kosher certification, labeling, specifications, and product claims.
  • Maintain and update R&D documentation, including processes, procedures, and records.
  • Collaborate with procurement and production teams on cost optimization initiatives.
  • Participate in JBSS Strategic Value Analysis (SVA) initiatives to support continuous improvement and value creation.

Education, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science/Technology or Food/Chemical Engineering is required.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a science or engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Seven or more years of experience in the food industry, specifically in R&D and/or product development. Private label experience is preferred.
  • Proven track record of technical innovation, strong technical skills, and successful product development in food products. Culinary experience is a plus.
  • Experience in consumer-driven product development is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability in defining project scope, along with strong influencing and leadership skills, is required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements is preferred. Experience with Product Vision software is highly desirable.

  • Ability to maintain a neat and organized work area.
