JOB SUMMARY:

To administer, maintain, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server databases across the enterprise. This role ensures the high availability, performance, and security of SQL environments. Responsibilities include installation and configuration, backup and recovery, performance tuning, and support for development and infrastructure teams. The DBA will also contribute to strategic planning and provide expert-level troubleshooting and consultation. Viewed as a subject matter expert in SQL Server technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances and databases. This includes Azure SQL Database.
• Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies.
• Design and implement backup, recovery, and high availability solutions.
• Ensure database security through access controls and auditing.
• Collaborate with development teams to optimize queries and schema design.
• Create and maintain documentation for database environments.
• Perform capacity planning, forecast storage needs, and work to eliminate older versions of SQL Server
• Manage disaster recovery planning and testing for critical databases.
• Provide Tier 3 support for database-related incidents.
• Stay current with SQL Server features and best practices.

RESPONSIBILITY BREAKDOWN

Percentages represent guidelines only; may vary by position and fluctuate due to changing business needs.

1. 35% – Database administration and optimization – Ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing SQL Server environments.
2. 25% - General support of other teams / end user solutions including replication, data extract processes, connection troubleshooting, etc.
3. 15% – Backup, recovery, and high availability – Implement and manage strategies for data protection and uptime.
4. 15% – Development support – Assist developers with query optimization, schema design, and performance troubleshooting.
5. 5% – Documentation and compliance – Maintain accurate records of configurations, policies, and procedures.
6. 5% – Capacity planning and monitoring – Track usage trends and forecast future needs.
7. 5% – Tier 3 technical support – Support other team members by providing industry expertise on difficult and complex issues.

TECHNICAL AND FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

• Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and newer).
• Experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
• Knowledge of native backup and recovery tools
• Familiarity with Always On Availability Groups and replication.
• Strong understanding of T-SQL and scripting (e.g., PowerShell).
• Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., SentryOne, SolarWinds, SQL Monitor).
• Maintenance windows may occur on weekends; on-call support is required.
• Other duties may be assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
