Staff Data Scientist

Redwood City, California Area - Hybrid (3 days in office each week)

Salary: $275,000 - $310,000 base + bonus + equity

They are currently undergoing a major AI expansion initiative, investing heavily in machine learning and AI capabilities to deliver more personalized, efficient, and trusted marketplace experiences at scale.

About the Role

This company is seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist to play a key role in their growing AI organization. In this role, you’ll design and lead high‑impact data science initiatives, building models that power critical marketplace functions such as personalization, recommendations, search ranking, content moderation, and trust & safety. You’ll be responsible for setting technical direction, mentoring other team members, and driving innovative AI solutions from concept to production.

This is a high‑ownership role where you will have autonomy to work independently, collaborate across functions, and influence the company’s AI strategy.

What You’ll Do

• Lead end-to-end ML projects for personalization, recommendations, feed ranking, and GenAI use cases.
• Partner with ML Engineers to build and scale production-ready systems.
• Drive experimentation to improve marketplace metrics (CTR, conversion, trust & safety scores).
• Mentor junior data scientists and guide technical execution within squads.

What They’re Looking For

• Strong Python skills and experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch preferred).
• Proven track record in recommendation systems, ranking models, NLP, or computer vision.
• Experience with large-scale consumer data in e-commerce, marketplaces, or social commerce.
• Knowledge of the full ML lifecycle and scaling models to millions of users.
• Background in high-scale consumer tech is a plus.
